Among other fine musicians who live in my area is Thelonious Monk Jr. who has organized free jazz concerts in the local park etc.
Tom, Cornet is right as well. I thought I remember a few times he played trumpet so I added that in to cover my bases. But your point about that mellowness is totally on the mark. The cornet has a mellower tone than a trumpet, and a lot of stuff Nat played with his brother was elegantly mellow. But, Nat could, and often did, dig in deep and play some feisty hard-edge licks. Those times were all the more interesting 'cause he still blew his cornet. Truly unique.

~ WillyAlamedaTomhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01623796440779934437noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4567168789336947243.post-78836912529880106932009-10-10T18:11:58.660-04:002009-10-10T18:11:58.660-04:00Nat Adderley was great, and "Work Song" ...Nat Adderley was great, and "Work Song" is a classic. Great to hear the name has been carried on.

I wrote a piece a while back about my old bass teacher, Jimmy Garrison, and got a beautiful note from his son Matt, who is also a dynamite musician.

And John & Alice Coltrane's son Ravi is a fine, fine sax player. It's genes, of course, but I think it's more than that - it's spiritual genetics, too.RJ Eskowhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09951452784489009865noreply@blogger.com
