I haven't seen the documentary, but I did stand in the rain & mud at the Newport Folk Festival (in '68, I think)and saw & heard him sing "Knee-Deep in the Big Muddy," a song that inspired the peace movement throughout the country. He has always been fearless in confronting the misuse of power. He has a depth of political and personal courage--in the deeply American tradition of principled dissent--that baffles and infuriates all the fake patriots on the right, who are always compelled to genuflect before authority in all circumstances.

My band played on the same bill with Pete (I think it was some kind of Labor Day-Sean O'Casey birthday commemoration)at Town Hall in the '80s, and it was a privilege to be associated with such a great American.

---TPWAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4567168789336947243.post-40615382270033581832008-03-01T13:25:00.000-05:002008-03-01T13:25:00.000-05:00Doug, thanks for the tip, I'll look for the Louis/...Doug, thanks for the tip, I'll look for the Louis/Owens doc. As for Schmelling, the documentarty I saw points out that Coca Cola gave him the Coke franchise in Germany after the war, making him a rich man, while Louis got nothing.
As for anonymous implying that Pete Seegar is like Hitler because Seeger can get a crowd to sing along to songs about not harming the earth and being kind to others and cleaning up the Hudson River (!), typical of right wing idelogues' inability to accept any reality that doesn't fit their blind beliefs. If anyone who can move a crowd is comparable to Hitler, than hats off to Adolf Reagan.Lallyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05310472614196384595noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4567168789336947243.post-80583337860633767992008-03-01T10:08:00.000-05:002008-03-01T10:08:00.000-05:00Joe Louis and Jesse Owens were the first two unive...Joe Louis and Jesse Owens were the first two universally acclaimed African-American heroes. Also, they have been credited as being important figures in helping set the stage for the civil rights movement.

There's a fair HBO movie called Joe and Max that tells the story of their two historic fights, and shows how Schmeling was a decent guy victimized by history.

There was a terrific New Yorker profile of Pete Seeger a couple of years ago. I'll copy it for you, if I can dig it up. I've been listening to American Favorite Ballads and the Greatest Hits recently. Good stuff.

I was wondering about the Joe Louis doc, and I will watch it now, and I'll look for the Seeger doc, too.douglanghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00045305196252862765noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4567168789336947243.post-63504379617950063062008-02-29T17:55:00.000-05:002008-02-29T17:55:00.000-05:00Pete and Joe, good combination..I wonder what Pete...Pete and Joe, good combination..I wonder what Pete would think?M.s Donahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10229775608956971086noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4567168789336947243.post-90335610658182702812008-02-29T16:51:00.000-05:002008-02-29T16:51:00.000-05:00I agree.
