Hyperbole aside, I had no idea he would have been considered the "Mickey Mantle of Country Music." I was under the impression he didn't hit his stride until he tuned in, turned on and dropped out.
He backed some country stars on guitar around this time too, as well as writing many country hits, some of which became popular hits.
