"While looking for the light, you may suddenly be devoured by the darkness and find the true light." —Jack Kerouac from THE SCRIPTURE OF THE GOLDEN ETERNITY
"I like trees because they seem more resigned to the way they have to live than other things do." —Willa Cather (can't remember where I got this one from)
"Imagination though it cannot wipe out the sting of remorse can instruct the mind in its proper uses." —Willaim Carlos Williams from KORA IN HELL
[I may have posted these before, but today they seemed relevant and useful to me so here they are]

beautiful - i know what i'll be reading tonight ...
the cather's quote reminds me of a poem i heard toward the end of the reagan years - something like:
' six years in another town and i can't believe all that's gone down - i'm talking to the trees again and i haven't done that since God knows when ...'
why did the poet like to talk to trees?
Thanks for remembering man. It's funny, when I first read your comment, I thought those lines were pretty cool and sounded familiar, maybe from a song, before I recognized them as mine! I've written elsewhere, in poetry and prose, about how trees are the deepest of all living creatures (and actually I believe everything is alive, call it poetic license, I call it reality, and I notice some scientific studies are beginning to catch up with that kind of poetic perception) because they are deeply rooted in the earth, unlike most creatures, including us, in a way that not only centers them in the reality of our world, literally, but also, at least in my identification with their consciousness can feel the subtle movements of the earth, as well as reaching toward the heavens, let alone serving as air purifiers for us by breathing in and out every twenty-four hours, making them the deepest breathing of all creatures and therefore the masters of the meditative breath. They teach us much, about history, about longetvity, about the natural connectedness of all living things etc. etc. I could go on, obviously.
you ought to post a few here and there - for art's sake ...
A tree knows how to sit and inhabits heaven and earth.
