HAITI

There is nothing to say about this tragedy, which is why I haven't.

But there is something to say about preachers and politicians using it to further their agendas (I'm talking about Pat Robertson's dispicable comment about this being the result of the Haitians making a pact with the devil back when they got their freedom from France! or Rush or those other Republican politicians using it to criticize this administration or et-here-we-go-again-cetera).

And at the risk of provoking more ideological comments with no logic or factual basis, I might point out that Bill Clinton was already helping transform Haiti into a more peaceful and on the road to recovery place for the first time in its recent if not entire history, and that Jimmy Cater also contributed and contributes greatly to helping all kinds of devastated areas of the world and their peoples, and what again did Nixon or Reagan do in their retirement from their presidencies?

I´m glad, just heard that Germany sent a plane over to Haiti with a mobile hospital, doctors & other aides.I have to thank my country but that doesn´t mean that we all should stop to donate. The people on Haiti still need us!

This one seems to have attracted some spam, Lally. I've had what looks to be spam arrive in my email box, ostensibly from you but I suspect not. It was addressed from someone called Public enemies. Needless to say, I did not open it and have since deleted it.

The trouble for all of us, when we blog about sensitive political messages we cop it from spammers or whoever.

On the other hand, it might just be chance.

Saw Robertson's comment on the Daily Show. Unfathomable..... I can't decide which of the following is more disturbing:

a) he believes what he said

b) he said it with some ulterior motive

Yikes.

It is also disconcerting to think about the substantial numbers of people who take their "spiritual" direction from him. Sheesh.

I did not realize that Jimma and Bubba had a monopoly on good works in the face of disasters. I was under the impression that Clinton and Bush One formed an alliance for good after the 2004 tsunami. Just saying...

For some fact-based analysis that shows the history of bi-partisan counter-democracy intervention in Haiti (including Clinton), see this.

More importantly, send some money. My friends have turned our monthly poker game into “Celebrity Poker”, sending all the money for relief. I’ve already donated here.

Elisabeth, I'm not sure what you mean. Is that first comment before yours spam?

The only ones who've made a pact with the Devil - who are evil - are those like Robertson, Limbaugh and their ilk who seek to provoke, frighten, confuse and who rant in order to create havoc and seek attention and profit from the misfortune of others. If Rush were a true patriot he'd stand behind and support his President, who by the way represents all the ideals put forth by the founding fathers he (Rush) and others oft allude to, as well as the ideals set forth in all the great documents alluded to, the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, etc. If I say any of these abolute cowardly hypocrits (including Glen Beck-O'Reilly-Hannity) on the street, even though I am officially diabled now, I'd put 'em all in a rear-naked choke hold until they bitch-tapped out. Freakin coward-hypocrits.

Whoa, if Robert Zuckerman, one of the kindest and most gentle giants I've ever known, is feeling that angry about the right wing vitriol, maybe there's hope for a pro-progressive active mobilization ala the unfortunately mostly retro/reactionary "tea bagger" thing.

Just like Katrina, in the coming weeks and months we are going to see blame-the-victim justifications for Haiti’s poverty and the destructiveness of the earthquake. In other words, racism. Unfortunately there will be a large number of people in the US that will accept this easy explaination.

Here is a short vignette of life in Port-Au-Prince before the quake by a frequent visitor there.

Send money.

Michael, it's just that we're so beyond zero hour there's just no room or tolerance for this kind of completely negative, counter-productive (in other words, destructive) ignorance. The great Zen masters say, "when hungry eat, when tired sleep, when angry shout." Love ya man for having this forum. rz

I suspect it is. Note its from anonymous. not all those who travel under that title are spam, but I suspect this one is, unless he/she tells you otherwise. Sometimes spammrs arbitrarily hook onto someone's blog and try to get in that way. i wouldn't worry. If it's genuine, he/she will let us know, if not nothing will happen, as I say I deleted the one that came ostensibly from you, so it can't do any of us any harm I hope.

Sorry to seem pedantic about these things, but they trouble me. To me these sorts of spammers are a bit like the cancers of the blogosphere and they are not benign.

With the Obama croud everything is politics. In at least one of Rush's parodies he was doing Harry Reid in the light skinned negro thing, which by the way some have noted different treatment for Trent vs. Harry. Has any one here noticed?

I hear ya Robert. And Elisabeth, you might be right, sorry about the purported link from me. I deleted those from that particular post. As for Jim, how comforting that right wing ideologues think that a man saying he wished a racist segregationist running on a racist segregationist platform for president at a time when Southern African-Americans were being lynched and legally prevented in the South from using public bathrooms or diners or parks or whatever, that somehow is equal in a rightwinger's mind to an aging senator remarking that part of the appeal of our first African-American president might have something to do with the fact that he doesn't come across as as "black" in appearance or speech as he might and therefore isn't such a threat to recovering racists, etc. Poor rightwing ideologues, their brains are wired to come to such conclusions (i.e. white man running to maintain racial segregation equals white man supporting African-American for president! et-shall-we-say-it-all-together-endlessly-cetera).

Alright Mike, You have not lost any of your tortured logic. As for Haiti and politics, No one says it better than Bubba.

"Then Clinton turned to his decision to come to Boston. "Somebody asked me today, 'Well, why are you going to this political rally?'" he began.

"And I said to them, this is just two sides of the same coin. You have to bear with me. I have friends killed there. I've worked with this country for 35 years. Hillary and I had a good cry on the phone because the cathedral that we sat in the pews 35 years ago was totally destroyed.

But it reminds you all over again of the importance of good governance. Now, good governance would not have prevented this earthquake, but if we'd had decades of it, there would have been different buildings there, and less deforestation, and a sustainable economy. I mean, the whole thing would be different. So what I want to say to you is, I'm here today because I believe in Martha Coakley…"

Hopefully Harry hangs on long enough to be beaten in November.

The first signs of abandonment from within Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s own party emerged Sunday, as some Democrats said his racially charged comments about President Obama have placed his already perilous reelection prospects on the precipice.
“He’s in deep trouble, I think,” said one senior aide to a member of the House Democratic leadership. “Even with the apology, no matter what it’s a negative thing. There are a lot of minorities that vote [in Nevada].”

Here is an update on ethics from MSNBC's Ed Schultz.

Ed Schultz: I'd cheat to keep Brown from winning By Kerry Picket on Jan. 16, 2010

SCHULTZ (23:02): I tell you what, if I lived in Massachusetts I'd try to vote 10 times. I don't know if they'd let me or not, but I'd try to. Yeah, that's right. I'd cheat to keep these bastards out. I would. 'Cause that's exactly what they are.

By the way Mike, your call for a liberal progressive "Tea Bagger"(a liberal sexual term denoting extreme revulsion of Tea Party Folks) is unlikely to happen since liberals only represent 20% of the US population. Conservatives are at 40% with moderates making up the difference. In Massachusetts polling, independents are 65% for Brown.
