QUOTE FOR THE TENTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE START OF THE WAR IN AFGHANISTAN

"...in this dreary, difficult war, I think history will record that this may have been one of America's finest hours."  —President Nixon, July 30, 1969 (that's not even halfway through what was until Afghanistan "America's longest war")

"America" --- what does that word mean? We have this amazing, plentiful society. What does it mean or matter to "lead the world"? Military clout? This thinking is rooted in ancient tribalism. If "America" is to lead the world, let's lead, as a guide and protector leads others through the wilderness, as opposed to "rule" or "dominate." Let's lead with ideas, with education, with peace and safety. Let's lead by promoting an end to hunger, healthcare for all, an end to violence against women, discrimination of all kinds, and I'll repeat, with education-and not just academics, but life, for it is ignorance that is the cause of the vast majority, if not all of, the world's problems.

Lal--How a propos that Nixon gem is. And can't you just hear it, or the 2011 equivalent, being mouthed by, say, Leon Panetta or David Petraeus? They always prate about how "noble" it is to kill off other people's kids in wars none of us voted for.
And don't forget that Gary Wills called Nixon "the last liberal," and that not totally tongue-in-cheek.

Jim, it's telling to see you abandoning your ardent espousal of the founding principals of this country, including your beloved original "Tea Party" in putting down those who are out in the streets protesting wrongdoing and a corrupt system. Your true racist, classist colors are coming through as strong as ever.

Robert,
Do you have any thoughts on Herman Cain? He is my favorite for president at this point.

Robert;
I want to go back to this "American" concept you mentioned.
I am beginning to harbor some resentment toward politicians and news commentators that continually throw around the line: "What the American People want".
Neither I or any of my friends or colleagues are represented in that cover all, 'talking point'. I have yet to hear what I want when the phrase is mentioned.
I've also insistently tried to write to them to ask them to please stop using the phrase because it is totally misrepresents so many of us.
Frankly, I don't believe any of them have a clue - but what you clarified is what this 'people' wants ...

I like Herman Cain as a stand up guy, but he doesn't win me over.

I live in the boundaries of this nation, was born on this continent, therefore, I am "American." And yet, as I said on an earlier comment chain, before I am "American", I am a planetary inhabitant, a citizen of the globe. But because I was born here and am a legal citizen, my viewpoint and belief system are fully, 100% American by definition. The Politicians and New Media represent a minimal, one dimensional, inaccurate, harmful view and definition of what an "American" is. Jim's referral to the "unwashed" represents a puerile, bigoted, hypocritical viewpoint of citizens exercising their CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS.

A single murder, if sensationalistic and grisly enough, grabs headlines. Yet the mass murder of war often goes under-reported, as if to bolster Stalin's claim that "a single death is a tragedy; a million deaths is a statistic." (Nixon would would have agreed with Stalin, I'm sure.)

I try to avoid the term "American" since the way it is generally used leaves out most people who actually live in the Americas, like Canadians, Mexicans, Central and South Americans etc. So instead of "America" I try to stick with U.S. and USA though nobody wants to use USAans so I say U.S. citizens or those who live in the USA or keep "American" in quotes.

what I WANT ?

to put $1 down one time
and hit the lottery jackpot and instantly become a multi-billionaire

without so much as contributing a single meaningful thing to The American Way of Greed !

next thing you'll see is that the Dems will drop their present VEEP

(what's his name?) and their 20012 ticket will be Obama/Clinton !

so much for freedom of choices ...
