THE SAD IMPACT OF RIGHTWING PROPAGANDA

I was at this place where I did some physical rehab once and the owner lets me use it to work out. He keeps the TV on CNN for me with subtitles, but with the sound off for everyone else. The radio's playing Christmas songs and there's a survivor kind of camaraderie. Not too many people who look like me, a diverse group of many shades and accents, though the dominant one is working class Jersey.

There's immigrants and injured cops and firemen and retirees and the occasional young athlete. Some are regulars and friends, but as I'm doing my routine a woman I hadn't seen before, a big beefy middle aged lady sitting up on a therapy table with one of those electric stimulator machines soothing her injury, looks at the TV and says:

"Oh Jesus no, every time that man opens his mouth the stock market goes down."

I look to see who she's talking about and there's our president standing at a podium speaking. I can't make out the words so don't know what it is but can't help saying, "That's not true."

"Oh yes it is," she says, "they said it on the TV" and I already knew she meant Fox News.

There were a few more exchanges as I tried to enlighten her, pointing out the fact that the stock market was plunging off the deep end when he got elected and under him it's turned around, mentioning the success of the auto bailout with Chrysler paying back their loan six years ahead of time with interest, and the rest.

But she wasn't having any of it. When it looked like I might be more prepared to defend my position with facts, she said we shouldn't talk politics. So I stopped.

Later in the day when I got home, I turned on the news and there was the same shot of our president speaking at the podium and what he was saying when she made her misinformed and, unknowingly or not, lying accusation about the president, was that the war in Iraq is over. A war generated and supported by the last president and his party's lies, a war whose price tag contributed mightily to our debt and the economic catastrophe they created.

I guess that's what you call ironic. But I'm sure she wouldn't have any of that either.

It may be IRONIC, but really it's MORONIC. Intellectually lazy, bereft carcasses who have brought our country down. Hypocrits who claim to be patriots but have no idea what that word means. They throw lit cigarette butts and other litter out the window of their cars that have American flags on them, they don't give a damn about this country or even know what it is. Like the guy in the doctor's office waiting area a couple of years ago who said of President Obama "he should go back to Saudi Arabia where he was born." Or the movie set security guard who said "the President's health bill says that everyone over 65 should commit suicide - it's true, I saw it written there." "Show me." I said. And of course he couldn't, but still clung to his baseless, moronic, dangerous idiocy. I'm sure all of these pathetic creatures who are taking up the oxygen and resources of good people are all related to each other, and are the inbred siblings of Jim.

Another tragic example of senseless gun violence -- guns too easily obtainable in our country and the use of them irresponsibly promulgated by the media. There is no "well regulated militia" and there is no --- none, zero --- justification for the glut of guns in this country, for their use depicted 24/7 on primetime tv and in films.

Thanks for the link Robert and your passion.

Yep - Sounds like that 'electronic stimulator machine' was attached to the wrong injury - or perhaps higher voltage would have been required to stimulate that muscle between her ears.

Its good to see some straight ahead anger directed at these idiots - Thank you Robert. We've been far too understanding, compassionate, and providing the benefit of doubt to these nimrods too long. Time for some spirited resistance and consequence.
The problem with media, social networking, and this flood of ignorant opinion is that it is moving like a super contagion without resistance. If the bar is lowered any further, no intellect or reason will be able to pass.
I'm sure the right wing contortionists see this as an opportunity to smother any reasonable dissent among their rise to glory with banality - and they know they've activated that base and there's no shortage of ignorance in America.
I'm already choking on it ...

Jim's repeat cut and past ranting is re-confirmation for the nth time that he has clearly taken leave of his mind and is in serious need of psychiatric and/or psychological help. Please, if you are Jim's family and you happen to read this, please look out for him.

Michael, I heard Mark Levin say again on Fox radio today that Obama is a Marxist who hates this country and is trying to tear it down. This is said casually and repeatedly in the context of self-description as one who has been a lifelong student of philosophy and the history of conservatism. Hannity continues to say every 10 minutes, " Obama is destroying this country"

The stock market quote seems mild in comparison.

Robert G. Zuckerman said...

Levin, Hannity et al are the ones damaging this country. Fortunately, there remain too many decent, honorable people for them to destroy it, but they are harming it and are undeniablly treasonous.

It's pretty weird out there for sure. When we were kids there were people like that but they didn't have national TV shows or one of the two major political parties parroting them. Calling Obama a Marxist or a socialist is like calling Bush Junior an Jungian or a liberal. It's still but they mastered the big lie technique, make it unreasonable enough and say it often enough and people will begin to believe it.

woops. That was one of those post-op brain slips, I thought I was typing "it's silly" not "it's still"...

The retail market continues to improve, with sales increasing slightly during the month of October, according to new data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Sales for the month totaled $397.7 billion after being adjusted for season variation as well as holiday and trading-day differences. Overall, sales were up 0.6 percent compared to September and 7.3 percent year-over-year.

Heading into the traditionally busy holiday season, this latest report bodes well for retail merchants. Given waning consumer confidence, spurred by the stagnating unemployment rate, many retailers predicted retail sales may have actually slowed down. As a result, many even considered reducing inventory so they wouldn't get stuck with leftover merchandise.

However, with sales marking slight improvements going into November, retailers should have little to fear.

"Retailers' early holiday promotions seemed to strike the right chord with shoppers last month," said NRF president and CEO Matthew Shay. "Knowing the economy is still a big factor in customers' shopping decisions, retailers will continue to offer great deals and exceptional value throughout the holiday season."

Let's hope that with the Iraq war ended, funds will be redirected back to our educational system, which a far more powerful and lasting defense than guns. Let's also hope that returning soldiers are embraced, cared for and employed by our society and by the corporations that profited from their deployment and incursions.
