Joe is a patriot, at least, on the Terror War. He shows a hint of sanity on the domestic front. We shall see.
A little context.
Which freshman Senator actively campaigned for Lieberman in the 2006 Democratic primary (against anti-war Ned Lamont), saying "I am absolutely certain Connecticut is going to have the good sense to send Joe Lieberman back to the U.S. Senate so he can continue to serve on our behalf”?
Which Democratic Senator's only support for the Democratic candidate Lamont’s challenge to incumbent ex-Democrat Lieberman in the general election was to send out 225 emails?
Who pressured the Senate leadership to let Lieberman caucus with the Democrats and accede to his demands for Homeland Security Chairmanship after Lieberman actively campaigned for McCain.
Maybe the disappointment and disgust is misplaced. Lieberman is just being Lieberman. Obama has been his enabler.
i'm still waiting for anyone who can give me a reasonable explanation for where this 'war on terror' is, who we're fighting, and where their leader is ...
obviously the majority of the world opposes 'it' - but where is 'it' ...
and if lieberman is a patriot for fighting ghosts rather than fighting for the health and welfare of his constituency - then in the spirit of halloween, give the ghoulish caricature of a politician a piece of candy and send him on his way ...
Paul, the actions of the Obama judicial department indicate that they agree with you.
I think it’s significant that corporate spokesman turned politician St. Reagan launched the War on Terror, as well as the War on Drugs, as US brands. Both are perfect Mad Ave abstractions, capable of generating emotional responses but at bottom having no substance.
With these abstractions politicians can adopt policies without any debate on their real world consequences. Hence, 25 years after Reagan began the War on Drugs we have hundreds of thousand of poor youth, mainly black, in jail for possessing a small amount of drugs, plus 7 military bases in Columbia. As Church Lady would say, how convenient.
Bush expanded rules of engagement for the War on Terror to claim the US prerogative to attack and kill anyone, anywhere and capture, torture, and hold anyone, anywhere in secret and without trial. Obama is continuing most of Bush’s policies in the War on Terror.
The beautiful thing about the War on Terror from the imperialists’ point of view is there will be no “victory”. Unless the terms of debate are changed we can look forward to perpetual war.
Even saints make mistakes. The War on Drugs is a waste of money and resources and does not work.
