THERE IS NO REASONABLENESS FOR FANATICS

It's truly become pointless to even try and respond to the right's more and more wild accusations about Obama and the Democrats and government in general.

The kinds of accusations I'm hearing from other sources (here's one for instance), that Rush and Beck and Palin and other rightwing demagogues are making now, go beyond even their usual ruthless distortion of reality to a fantasy land that because of its influence can only lead to serious consequences for all of us.

Like I've said on previous posts, my experience with regaining many functions and abilities I lost after the brain surgery has taught me that when the brain lacks the wiring to make the obvious connections it needs to make in order to use logic and reasoning to determine a solution to a problem, it ends up substituting the easiest explanation it can find.

In other words the corporate shills, that Rush and Beck and others obviously are, probably know their lies and distortions serve their corporate sponsors and masters etc. and are either faking it (we see this often when rightwing Republican politicians are caught thinking their microphones are off making disparaging and dismissive comments about their followers) or have convinced themselves their propaganda and demagoguery is necessary to defeat the "Communist/Fascist/Antichrist" they portray Obama as.

Some of these tactics were used by the left in the late 1960s and early '70s and I fought against them as much as I did anything else. Coming from a family of cops I knew all policemen weren't "pigs" etc. But I also knew the analyses by most leftist intellectuals and leaders were based on facts, on a reality that the mass media of the time tried to cover up or simply ignore. Unlike many of Beck's and Rush's pronouncements that are based on lies necessary to foment animosity and rage against "the other" (i.e. minorities, Dems, "liberals" or "progressives" etc.).

It's obviously working as those whose brains cannot make the logical and reasonable connections—and thereby conclusions—demonstrate with their ongoing daily attacks on anything their leaders and spokespeople target for them (as The Daily Show and Rachel Maddow et. al. often highlight with reels showing the talking points of the day on the right being repeated verbatim all day throughout the rightwing media and the mainstream media they have such enormous sway over these days (which almost never uses the same kind of factual references to expose the usual rightwing lies (the Shirley Sherrod experience being one of the few where they were forced to but then made it all about the Obama administration apology rather than the rightwing's manipulation of the so easily manipulated mainstream media, but the distorted edited videos that led to ACORN's being misrepresented weren't corrected as most rightwing lies and distortions aren't in the MMS, etc.)

This occurred during the 1960s where many myths developed on the right based on rightwing propaganda and lies but which were nowhere near as insidious as those being perpetrated these days by Beck and Rush and their ilk. Like the myth that returning Viet vets were spit on and called "babykillers" as a matter of course. If it ever happened at all it was probably right after the Mai Lai massacre was exposed where US troops did kill babies and it was discovered that it wasn't the first or last time.

But in general the "hardhats" (rightwing demonstrators for the war who were initially characterized as construction workers mostly but often, as these days, were promoted and provoked and funded by rightwing organizations) were the ones who did the spitting and the hitting while most "flower children" and even the later SDS anti-war demonstrators of which I was one and often in a leadership position, made peaceful gestures toward these same "hardhats"—as well as National Guard troops and even the police sent to control or put down demonstrations—who we tried to educate about the lies used to justify the continuing war deaths and destruction.

But when attacked some attacked back as in picking up tear gas canisters and smoke bombs meant to disperse crowds of demonstrators and throwing them back at the police or National Guard troops who fired them. Often, when the main stream media references those days and those demonstrations you see mostly long haired young men throwing these smoking canisters at the police or National Guard troops but almost never does this same stock footage show the initial attack by the police or National Guard.

Anyway, even in those turbulent times very few on the left—and no on with the kind of media access and audience of a Beck or a Rush—used outright lies as the basis for their attacks on the government of that time. It was true then that the government was lying in order to keep support for a war based on lies. And that the FBI was spreading lies in the media in order to discredit leftist activists and peace organizers etc.

The idea that Obama is a "communist" let alone a "socialist" (I wish!) or "fascist" or "Nazi" or "illegal" or a "Muslim" or out to deliberately and consciously destroy his and our country is so preposterous that if you had told me or anyone else back in the 1960s that someday we'd have a part African-American president and these things would be said about him in major media outlets we'd have thought our greatest hopes and worst fears had come true at the same time. True indeed.

[And PS: "hope" is kind of spiritually useless in a way, as my old friend Hubert Selby used to say, because it's based on future projections rather than present reality where to maintain spiritual balance we need to live—i.e. in the "eternal now"—and then work for the changes we see as being beneficial to all so that the future reality may look more like what we envision as a better world, or as our president likes to say, quoting the Founding Fathers, "a more perfect union" (a little grammtically incorrect of course, how can anything be "more perfect" than perfection etc.)]

[And PPS: I know I went ahead and did what I said at the top was pointless, but as one of my favorite writers, Marth Gelhorn, said after she realized historical events were not necessarily going to go the way her youthful idealism had hoped, that at least she could bear witness to what actually is going on.]

In the news just today there are two more reasons to be thankful those evil, war mongering, right wingers aren’t in power. See here and here.

Obama not being part of the power elite, ruling class, military industrial complex, whatever you want to call it, is sooo reassuring. And don’t forget the Nobel!

You sure use a lot of words to make an argument that is pointless. The simple question is where are the jobs? Is Obama's socialistic expansion of government into every day life working to provide increased jobs and opportunity. The numbers say no.

got this email today claiming that Obama said this, that is was transcribed from live video tape. Even a moron could discern that the speech pattern, verbiage, etc, is not that of our President, that it is made up, created to foster hate/fear/ignorance. I replied to all in this massive chain asking for someone to provide a link to the alleged video this came from and thus far have not heard back from anyone, not surprisingly:
Subject: Fwd: Meet The Press--Pretty frightening

He said this before he was elected. The Media kept it hidden except for actual "Meet The Press" interview. Thank God it is on tape. Pass it on. Obama plans to destroy America.

NOTE: This was said on "Meet The Press" therefore it is on tape and can't be denied.

Everyone PLEASE read this......

The following is a narrative taken from a 2008 Sunday morning televised "Meet The Press'. The author (Dale Lindsborg) is employed by none other than the very liberal Washington Post!!

From Sunday's 07 Sept. 2008 11:48:04 EST, Televised "Meet the Press" THE THEN Senator Obama was asked about his stance on the American Flag.

General Bill Ginn' USAF (ret.) asked Obama to explain WHY he doesn't follow protocol when the National Anthem is played.

The General stated to Obama that according to the United States Code, Title 36, Chapter 10, Sec. 171...During rendition of the national anthem, when the flag is displayed, all present (except those in uniform) are expected to stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. Or, at the very least, "Stand and Face It".

NOW GET THIS !! - - - - -

'Senator' Obama replied:

"As I've said about the flag pin, I don't want to be perceived as taking sides". "There are a lot of people in the world to whom the American flag is a symbol of oppression.." "The anthem itself conveys a war-like message. You know, the bombs bursting in air and all that sort of thing."

(ARE YOU READY FOR THIS???)

Obama continued: "The National Anthem should be 'swapped' for something less parochial and less bellicose. I like the song 'I'd Like To Teach the World To Sing'. If that were our anthem, then, I might salute

it. In my opinion, we should consider reinventing our National Anthem

as well as 'redesign' our Flag to better offer our enemies hope and love.

It's my intention, if elected, to disarm America to the level of acceptance to our Middle East Brethren. If we, as a Nation of waring people, conduct ourselves like the nations of Islam, where peace prevails - - - perhaps a state or period of mutual accord could exist between our governments ."

When I become President, I will seek a pact of agreement to end hostilities between those who have been at war or in a state of enmity, and a freedom from disquieting oppressive thoughts. We as a Nation, have placed upon the nations of Islam, an unfair injustice which is WHY my wife disrespects the Flag and she and I have attended several flag burning ceremonies in the past".

"Of course now, I have found myself about to become the President of the United States and I have put my hatred aside. I will use my power to bring CHANGE to this Nation, and offer the people a new path.. My wife and I look forward to becoming our Country's First black Family. Indeed, CHANGE is about to overwhelm the United States of America "

Credulity is a universal human trait and critical thinking is one of the many values not taught in our culture. The right wing leadership knows their flock is blessed with this trait, in abundance, to the point where some will accept an Onion video as evidence of a government conspiracy. (It seems to me that the right wing [authoritarian?] personality is also irony and humor deficient.)

It took a 5 second Google search to find the source of part of this invention — a right wing columnist’s scribblings during the 2008 election run up.

This reminds me of the spin cycle in the run up to the Iraq invasion: Cheney tells Judy Miller that there are WMDs >> Judy and the NY Times write about WMDs >> Cheney cites the NY Times as evidence for WMDs. Sadly there are still some people who believe that WMDs were there, including this guy.

The media doesn't promote critical thinking — we citizens need to.

Robert,
In response, let me offer the liberal libel that all
Tea Party Folks are racists and as proof look at Nancy and the black congressmen's walk to the capital. According to liberal legend spitting and racial slurs occurred, but no proof has surfaced dispite the offer $100,000 reward in this age of phone video and recordings.

Barack Obama is proving to be as ineffective as president as David Dinkins was as Mayor of New York City.

His attempt at Reganesque economic recovery is Green Energy. In our capitalist society had Green Energy been profitable it would exist as a viable alternative.

Obama's electric car will be another expensive flop. Not well thought out. Seemingly a complete lack of ability to look at the reality and come to the logical conclusion. (I can see the roads crowded with electic cars that have been unable to complete the trip.)

The fact of the matter is that Obama is the child of a mindset that only finds fault in this nation. (From Columbus to the present day) The goal is to delegitimize the founding of this nation in favor of joining the brotherhood of Third World nations. Lynne Stewart is the poster child for this Left Wing ilk who use our own laws and morality against us in the Alinskyite fashion. Their goal is Anarchy with no realistic plan for the rebuilding.

This nation may never be perfect, but it is the best hope that Mankind has in attaining perfection in government.

I saw Paul McCartney perform at the White House and receive the Gershwin Award on PBS the other evening - and though I'm more often annoyed by McCartney's commentaries, he made a salient point.
In accepting the Award from President Obama he said something like: "I know you are having difficulties, but there are billions of us that believe in you" ...
That pretty much puts it in perspective - as always, a few knarly, loud-mouth rednecks pretending to represent the people they continue to coerce with evil agendas - they become attractive as spectacle and believable through media to the dead heads who submit - and if that doesn't sound like the stupidity of pre-war Germany and Soviet propaganda, nothing does ...

Yes, billions who believe in Obama or the next guru or savior to care for them as the Father cares for the birds of the air or the fish of the sea. Billions of directionless sheep who have found thrmselves the picture of rigid conformity in their original pursuit of non-conformity.

The great evil according to the communalist is the individual who loses concern for the greater good in favor of personal gain and comfort. Yet Obama looks out at a nation of unemployed, homeless and hopeless and smiles as he wisks off to his next vacation with the wife and kiddies.

BF Skinner has the Left looking for schools to teach 'critical thinking' which in a sane free person is just common sense.

"Listen,
it's important.
We are all.
Free.
To do.
Whatever.
We want. To do."

so speaks Shimoda

Paul,
You overestimate the support liberalism has in this country.Polls have consistently found that liberals have about 20% support in the US and Conservative philosopy is around 40%.

Last and only comment on this thread since as the post says it's pointless to try and reason with people who have shown they are incapable of it. But surveys and polls consistently show that when people are questioned about specific issues they opt for "liberal" solutions to the country's problems, also Obama's numbers are higher at this point in his presidency than Reagan's were at the same point in his first term, and Obama's approval ratings are also higher than the Republicans or (really and since they're connected at the hip) Tea Partyers, and the Tea Paerty numbers have been falling for months now and are lower than they've been since they hit their peak almost a year ago. Not that I care about poll numbers but the rightwinger comments on this blog seem to when they can't answer the true arguments that a majority, almost a unanimous consensus of economists believe that Obama and the Dems stopped a precipitous fall in the economy that was leading to a worse depression than the one of the 1930s and that 3.5 million jobs were saved that would have been lost had Obama not taken the measures he took or had he continued with the policies of the previous Bush/Cheney administration. The right may be winning the propaganda wars thanks to Murdoch and Alies and their minions but the facts are still the facts. Obama has done more to help working folks in a year and a half in office than anyone in my lifetime, including the biggest tax cut in that period and according to some economists in history just last year, but you wouldn't know it from the rightwing bullied mass media or the rightwing media etc. I blame it on the education system that doesn't teach critical thinking (as it did when I was a kid which led to the 1960s and the right coming out against "liberal" education strategies (in K-12, obviously the left had more sway in some academic areas at the higher levels though never in business schools or most state schools etc.).

The miracle of Obamanomics seems to be delayed according to the commerce dept. If only Obama would blame Bush, Business, Rich Folks, Tea Party Folks more, all of whom must be liars and racists, we will soon break on through to the other side to socialist utopia. Liberals accept as dogma that a era of prosperity only needs higher taxes, more regulation and constraint of the free market system.
Obama in the Highest, Hosanna!!

Jeannine Aversa, AP Economics Writer, On Friday July 30, 2010, 8:34 am EDT
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The recession was deeper than the government previously thought.

The Commerce Department, in revisions issued Friday, estimates the economy shrank 2.6 percent last year -- the steepest drop since 1946. That's worse than the 2.4 percent decline originally estimated.

The economy's plunge underscores why the unemployment rate surged to 10.1 percent in October, a 26-year high.

Last and only comment on this thread since as the post says it's pointless to try and reason with people who have shown they are incapable of it.

Given the impossible, and frustrating, task of trying to convince the +/- 20% of the population that are the core of the right wing movement, one thing puzzles me.

Why spend your time addressing them, when you could use your energy and blog space to move Obama and the Democrats in a direction more to your liking?

Obama and the Democrats:
• have escalated the wars
• are drifting (or being pulled) towards an attack on Iran
• passed only one tepid stimulus bill
• are very close to abandoning the unemployed
• are on the way to a significant “reform” of social security
• stood by (I say aided) the consolidation of corporate & banking power
* amassing an atrocious civil liberties record (e.g. seeking to read our emails without a court order.)

Unlike you, I believe Obama and the Democrats are doing exactly what they want to do. They are part of the problem, evidenced by their performance once they got in power. You believe they are (or could be) the solution.

Instead of addressing those who won’t be convinced and are not in power, why not focus on those with power and who (I assume you believe) can be convinced?
