A REASONABLE PROPOSAL FROM GAIL COLLINS

Collins' NY Times Op-Ed columns are usually humorous and make some good points. This one isn't so humorous, but it certainly makes a great point.

[As does Paul Krugman here.]

Krugman was obviously unfamiliar with Obama's knife fight and enemies description of Republican political opponents.

Jim, the article is about automatic weapons sold to regular folks and the issue that is being ignored is gun control. You want to discuss it like an intelligent free thinking adult? Tell me why it's ok to buy a semi automatic weapon that is only used to kill people, not hunt. Don't site the second amendment, a rifle is one thing, a pistol another, an automatic weapon is literally overkill. Tell me your thoughts on this topic, w/o quoting any other source. With out bringing up any politician. Tell me what YOU think about guns, big ones, being sold to regular folks, not cops, not military, just joe blow. That's what I want to read from you next. Address the article, gun control.
Thank you, Caitlin

I somehow accidentally deleted the comment below:

Sorry Cait, he didn't answer your question but got into a lot of lies and name calling so I felt I had to delete. After awhile calling black white and the sky the earth and that kind of crap is just too much to have to accept. As Flynn said the other day, "The Republicans are like a bunch of big babies who throw tantrums if they don't get their way." Exactly.

Too bad, as Caitlin's question is an important and powerful one and this was an opportunity for Jim to step up to the plate. Unfortunately, for us, the world and especially for Jim, he hides behind skewed generalizations and brushstrokes of his interpretation of history and cannot own up or answer a hard question truthfully. As in my comment on your PPS posting about the nearly 400 treaties with the Native People's broken by our government. There are an estimated 270 million guns in America as of now, a large number of them automatic or semi automatic with expanded capacity clips for which ammo can be purchased at K-Mart, Walmart even if the buyer has a history of psychological or other problems. I have mentioned at least twice in comments how handguns are banned in Autralia and the incidence of homocide and other violence is almost non-existent there. Of course, no response to this has been forthcoming from Jim, just evasions and change of subject. Your loss Jim, you're missing out on an amazing world.

Sarah and Fox News' Roger Ailes are two who have acted with class in the face of hysterical inacuuracies from people like Krugman and Lally. I am proud to be a man of the sane "right wing", as you call it.

Here is quote from Rush. It seems right on with Lally and Krugman's contemptable behavior.

"Just ask yourself this. If the shooter had been a 22-year-old named Muhammad, would we be hearing that Muslim talk radio and the Muslim Internet blamed for it?" the top-rated host asked today. "No, we'd have been told that we can't blame Muslims for the action of one kook."

Limbaugh spent all three hours of his program today focusing on coverage of the weekend massacre that left Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., in critical condition and six others dead.

Limbaugh called attempts by many on the left to make the shooter seem influenced by those on the political right "sick."

Interesting thought; censor the president along with other objectionable speech.

TUCSON MASSACRE

Would crackdown on language include Obama?
Plan would ban words, symbols that could be perceived as threat

Robert Brady
A Democrat who has pursued a wide range of leftist causes and has drawn the praise of ex-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi now wants to ban language and symbols that could be used to perceive a threat against a federal official.

So the question is whether it would allow statements such as:

"So I know whose ass to kick."

"If they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun."

and "I don't want to quell anger. I think people are right to be angry. I'm angry."
That's because those statements all come from Barack Obama.

Jim, you didn't do any of the things I asked. You don't seem to be able to have your own opinion about the actual question asked. Gun control, your personal opinion, not your news sources opinion, what you think. I know what you think of my father, I know what you think about "lefties", I know what you think about socialism, what do YOU think about automatic weapons? As a man with children, who lives in the world, who interacts w/people in the grocery store or post office or other places where guns have been used to slaughter other human beings. What do YOU think?
Caitlin

As your father to forward the post he deleted in response to you.

He deleted them because you apparently didn't answer the direct question of what you think about gun control. How hard is this question to answer? You are the one who says you want to have a dialog, so I'm asking you to enter into one but still you are unable to do so. I fear for the future of my child in a world where people can't and won't answer direct questions. And yes, I include politicians in that statement, all on both sides.

I answered the question. Get it from your Dad.

Cait, Jim is going to be deleted for at least a while, but because of his response above to your latest question I'm going to reprint his answer, but first your original question:

Jim, the article is about automatic weapons sold to regular folks and the issue that is being ignored is gun control. You want to discuss it like an intelligent free thinking adult? Tell me why it's ok to buy a semi automatic weapon that is only used to kill people, not hunt. Thank you, Caitlin

And here is the response he calls an answer in keeping with your question:

Caitlin,
Your post is well reasoned and sound.
The question is how far the second amendment goes in protecting the right to bear arms. The judicial results are uneven.
Krugman has confirmed that he is a histerical idiot in blaming every one on the right for a murder. The left (including Lally) has blamed multiple violent attacks including Tuscon, Ft Hood, Times Square Bombing, Washington shooting etc, et endlessly etc. on Conservatives, rather than Islamic killers or leftists. Instead they attack conservatives including
Rush, Beck, Sarah etc. The liberals have repeatedly been wrong, misguided and beneath contempt.
PS God forbid, that one day a bonifide conservative will do a despicable murderous attack. It is only a matter of time before conservatives catch up with Islamacists and Liberals in murder.
PSS Just in case some liberal describes the murderer, McVeigh as a conservative, he was protesting the murder of women and children at Waco and in the Northwest by AG Reno.

Caitlan,
To expand, I am no expert on fire arms having been raised in a non firearms family in South Orange. I recently purchased a pistol to carry while hunting. The mountain lions have been active at my cabin at St. Mary's Glacier. A month or so ago upon returning to the cabin after dining in town, I found a large cat within 20 yards of me. It took off down the hill. The next morning I measured the prints he left in the snow in my driveway. It measured 4 to 5 inches in length which according to my Scats and Track handbook would put him at about 200lbs. Of course my pistol was in a drawer by bed. Most of my archery hunting friends have been raised in Colorado or similar semi rural areas. What works for Colorado may not work for South Orange or the city. The Supreme Court has upheld gun rights in Washington DC. That is the starting premice. I would think it is reasonable that different locale would have different rules. Automatic weapons have been outlawed which seems reasonable. It seems that an automatice pistol with a thirty plus magazine is unreasonable. Background checks for mental stability should be normal in my opinion. That was not the case in Tucson. I have occassionaly carried my pistol in my car in the Denver Metro area, when I has planning on going to a shooting range. Loyeen forbids me from having a gun in the townhouse in Lakewood,CO. I am comfortable with that even though there was an attempted carjacking of Loyeen's car. But that is another story.

Loyeen said...

Lally and Caitlin,

I do refuse to have any type of guns in my house. My students have had bothers and sisters killed by guns (gangs). I feel very strongly about weapons. Too many accidents or crazy people get their hands on them.
And the carjacking was by a man on meth. It was a very sad situation. And to give Jim credit he did come to my defense. That does not mean I want any type of weapons around me. I totally agree with the argument that we do not need semi-automatic weapons. Stay warm!!! Loyeen
